Scholars of Color- Janette Valenzo
What is Scholars of Color?
It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.
Let us now welcome Janette Valenzo to the Scholars of Color space!
Name: Janette Valenzo
Location: Inland Empire, Southern California
Gender Pronouns: she/her/ella
What's your current occupation? (i.e. Student, Scientist, Coach, In transition, etc.): Actor, poet, teaching artist, Tarot reader, student
Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: A Swiftie who loves romcoms, traveling, and spending time listening to true crime podcasts.
What are you passionate about?: I am passionate about mental health and how the arts can be used to advocate for the well-being of historically marginalized communities.
What does the representation of Scholars of Color mean to you?: It means that when one of us opens the door, we pull others through as well. Be the first in something, so there can be a second, a third, and so on. Seeing the numbers rise of people in higher education is inspiring. Additionally, highlighting individuals who are adding to the number of scholars of color shows others they too can do it and will find community as well.
If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: Website: janettevalenzo.com / IG: @janettevalenzo
Anything else you would like us to know?: I recently published a poetry book. "Before I Say Goodbye" is a poetic play in five acts that invites the reader into the story of an Aries Brujita & classic Virgo crashing into each other. It is the roadmap for anyone who has ever been afraid to leave a relationship. I worked on it while in grad school and it has been a wonderful experience to do both.
Thank you Janette for sharing space with us!
